Brachial Plexus
The brachial plexus is a nerve group connecting the spinal cord to the entire upper extremity, from the shoulder to the hand. When any part of this nerve network is stretched, compressed, or torn, it is known as a brachial plexus injury. These injuries can affect any age group and symptoms may include weakness or numbness in the hand or arm, shocking or burning sensations, and severe pain.
In addition to caring for common peripheral nerve problems, we provide expertise and treat the most complex brachial plexus injuries for both pediatric and adult patients.
Pediatric Brachial Plexus
Dr. Allan Peljovich, Dr. Joshua Ratner, Dr. Bryce Gillespie, and Dr. Erika Templeton are the surgeons for the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) Brachial Plexus Program. This is a state-wide and regional referral program for treating children with brachial plexus injuries. We not only treat infants with brachial plexus birth injuries but also children and adolescents with brachial plexus injuries from traumatic events.

Pediatric Brachial Plexus Injuries
Previously, patients of the CHOA Brachial Plexus Program were seen in the outpatient clinic at CHOA – Scottish Rite Hospital. But, as of summer 2019, the program is relocating to our offices at The Hand & Upper Extremity Center of Georgia.
Referrals to this program are no longer made through CHOA; instead, all referrals are made by calling (404) 255-0226 or you can refer a patient online.
It is important to know that Drs. Peljovich, Ratner, Gillespie, and Templeton, the only four surgeons of the CHOA Brachial Plexus Program, continue to provide the same expert care to patients now through The Hand & Upper Extremity Center of Georgia.
We coordinate therapy for nonsurgical treatment when needed, and when surgery is required, we perform nerve repair, nerve grafting, nerve transfers, or tendon transfers. Our surgical care for pediatric patients with brachial plexus injuries is performed at CHOA.

Adult Brachial Plexus
Dr. Allan Peljovich and Dr. Bryce Gillespie are also the hand and upper extremity surgery consultants to Shepherd Center, one of the largest rehabilitation hospitals in the U.S. They also specialize in treating brachial plexus injuries in adults.
